Baba Yaga

Page history last edited by MindBomber 17 years, 2 months ago

Baba Yaga is the scary auntie of Slavic/Russian folklore.

Card Text

(9) Baba Yaga (Wood)

RussianInspirationAllyFemale

Skrytaya: Opponents cannot attack you with weapons more than once each round. If any opponent has more than one weapon in play, you may attack with one of your weapons twice each round.

Baba Yaga is a cannibalistic witch. She is often called "bone legs", as she is very skinny. She rides in a huge mortar, using the pestle to steer, and is often referred to as "the devil's own grandmother."

Tournament Promo

Baba Yaga was the tournament organizer card in April of 2006. It was the tournament winner card later that same year, in October.

From the QCT

Will Allt A'Bhonnaich prevent Baba Yaga's ability from working if the player who has Allt is using something like Pou Whenua, Pair o' Cutlasses, or any other cards that say you can spend actions to attack with them?

•Baba Yaga prevents her opponent from attacking more than once - if the opponent would be using card abilities to make those attacks, then Baba Yaga is preventing her opponent from using those abilities. Therefore, Allt will stop Baba Yaga from preventing those abilities from being used.

•As usual, in a conflict between Allt and a card that attempts to prevent another ability, Allt wins.

Can you explain just how weaponless weapon attacks work? Specifically, I am referring to Gaiseric and Daniel Boone, who have similar abilities that create weaponless attacks with weapons.

To what degree do these count as weapon attacks? Does Baba Yaga stop them? Boone says it counts as a weapon attack, but doesn't say it counts as an attack with a weapon, so is it in essence a "weaponless weapon attack," getting around Baba Yaga's restriction?

•These abilities do work slightly differently, and you are correct in your readings of these cards.

•When Gaiseric uses his ability, he is not making a basic attack, and all abilities that key off of weapon attacks work as normal when possible. Obviously, we cannot discard the attacking weapon, or reference its grid or handedness, since these values do not exist. Any ability requiring a specific value for any of these traits will fail.

Daniel Boone can choose to make a basic attack (which will not be affected by Baba Yaga) and then change it's property once the attack has begun (which is too late for the attack to be prevented). Similarly, there is no attacking weapon, so the abilities that reference values on that weapon work as they do for Gaiseric.

Gameplay

Baba Yaga lends itself to flexible stables, and can be a good counter if you know the meta you'll be competing in. Even if your opponent never plays a multi-attack or a second weapon, you still get the 9 initiative. Since a lot of top-level weapons allow multiple attacks (Pou Whenua, Pair O' Cutlasses, Mech, to name a few), odds are that you'll run into at least one. In addition, certain other support cards allow players to make extra weapon attacks outside their turn (such as Caithbheart-Chuim Leathrach or Rocky Mountain Fur Company). The trick is to be able to read when these cards might show up.

Trivia

  • Baba Yaga is still a popular reference; you can find her in Miyazaki's Spirited Away, Mignola's Hellboy, and Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition.
