Godfrey of Bouillon was a warrior of noble birth, who took up arms in the First Crusade. One of the leaders of said crusade, and one of the first Crusaders into Jerusalem, Godfrey presided over the city until his death in 1100.

A leader of the first crusade, Godfrey was among the first to enter Jerusalem, amid the general slaughter of Muslims and Jews. He refused to be crowned King of Jerusalem, instead taking the title Advocatus Sancti Sepulchri, Advocate of the Holy Sepulcher.
