Son of Ast (or Isis) and Osiris, Horus fought against his uncle Seth for control of Egypt. Eventually, he won and exiled Seth to the Sahara Desert, but not before his eye was destroyed by Seth.

History in Brief

The Osiris Myth, part II: Horus Boogaloo

After the unfortunate events in the deaths and rebirth of Osiris, the angry and evil Seth still ruled as pharaoh. When Horus grew into manhood, he called Seth out for some payback. The two clashed in an epic battle. The gods declared Horus the winner, but not before Seth had taken his eye.

Horus became the new pharaoh. As the sky god, he also represented the sun and the moon. The sun part became a littly tricky (considering it also was the domain of Ra), but the loss of Horus's eye helped explain the phases of the moon. The Eye of Horus also became a powerful symbol of protection.

Trivia

Horus...

  • was represented in Ancient Egypt by the living pharaoh. After death, the new pharaoh was considered to be Horus incarnate, while the recently-deceased joined the previous kings as Osiris.
  • did not fight Seth in an alternate version of the myth; Isis convinced Seth to step down as pharaoh.
  • gave as good as he got in his fight with Seth. Horus may have lost an eye, but Seth lost something more important; Seth became as infertile as the desert he represented.
  • is holding a Was scepter (or Was staff) in the artwork on his Anachronism card.
  • is referenced in the Warhammer 40,000 game universe; the Astartes rebel Horus also bore a symbol known as the 'Eye of Horus'.
