Ifigenia was the daughter of Agamemnon and Clytemnestra. As the Achaeans prepared to leave for the Trojan War, it was discovered that the winds wouldn't let them; a soothsayer said it was because Agamemnon killed a sacred deer of Artemis. The only way to get moving is for Agamemnon to sacrifice this daughter.
