Jabal Tariq

Page history last edited by MindBomber 16 years, 9 months ago

A natural defensive formation, this mountain at the south of the Iberian peninsula was known in the ancient world as one of the "Pillars of Hercules". Tariq ibn Ziyad used it as his base of operations for the Moorish conquest of the peninsula. Today, it is known as Jabal Tariq, more popular as Gibraltar, or just "The Rock."

Card Text

(5) Jabal Tariq

SaracenSpecialLocation

Mohattem Elamwag - Reveal: Place this card in your warrior's space.

Maazul: Attack rolls made against a warrior in this space cannot gain a larger bonus than the defender's bonus to the defense roll.

Tariq ibn Ziyad began his conquest of Spain from this small mountain. Today, Jabal Tariq, the "Rock of Tariq," is better known as Gibraltar.

Jabal Tariq comes with the Tariq ibn Ziyad warrior pack.

Rulings

From the QCT

Ok if an attack is made against a warrior that has Jabal Tariq in play and the attacking warrior has Allt A'Bhonnaich in play. If the defending player didnt have a defense bonus would Jabal Tariq not let the attacking player gain any kind of bonuses to hit. Even if the attacking player has a support card such as Damhan-Allaidh Leantalach in play??

•If you have no bonuses to your defense roll, and you have Jabal Tariq in play, the attack roll will get no bonuses. This includes card abilities and attack grid bonuses. Note that rerolls, replacement effects (rolling more dice, etc) are not bonuses.

•If the attacker has Allt A'bhonnaich in play, his abilities cannot be prevented, so any bonuses from support card abilities would apply, but bonuses from attack grids and warrior abilities would not if they increased the attack bonus past the defense bonus.

__Example:__

Attacker has the following:

-Warrior ability providing +1 to attack rolls

-Support card ability providing +2 to attack rolls

-Attack Grid providing +1 to attack rolls

-Allt A'bhonnaich

Defender has the folloing:

-Support card ability providing +3 to defense rolls

-Jabal Tariq

•The support card ability works, and 1 of the 2 other bonuses from other sources would work. The last attack bonus point would carry the total above the defense bonus, and so is not applied.

Edit: Originally mis-posted; this paragraph is relevant to this question:

•Allt A'Bhonnaich would allow the attack roll bonuses from support card abilities to be used. Since your warrior's ability and your attack grid are not support card abilities, however, they would still be prevented if they would create or add to a total attack roll bonus that would be greater then the defender's defense roll bonus.

How does Jabal Tariq work with attacks that are made 'at +X'?

•Jabal Tariq affects the bonus that is already being applied to the attack, not adding a new modifier to the attack. This doesn't go against the rule that 'No other Modifiers of any kind can be applied to the Attack Roll,' so it is allowed.

•This appears to be in error the same way that my edited post above was. the 'at +X' rules in the rulebook state that the roll must be made at the listed modifier, and so, Jabal Tariq should not be able to change that modifier.

Siegfried, Broigne d'Ecailles, & Jabal Tariq

How do these three cards interact? Broigne d'Ecailles' ability is applied after a defense roll is made, allowing Siegfried's defense rolls with his ability to be increased to an 11.

However, does this suddenly allow an attack roll bonus (such as one provided by Ranga-nui or attack grids) of up to +3 to work as well? Or is it still prevented because the bonus would be applied before Broigne d'Ecailles is activated and cannot be applied afterwards?

•If the defense roll bonus for an attack changes during the attack roll process, the 'cap' on the attack roll bonus imposed by Jabal Tariq will change with it.

Is Siegfried's ability considered a roll bonus or a roll modification?

If his ability is considered a roll bonus, the way he interacts with Jabal Tariq changes drastically, and P. Absolutism will not prevent his text.

•Setting a roll to a value is not a bonus. When Siegfried plays Jabal Tariq, the attacker can gain no attack roll bonuses larger than Sigried's bonus (which may be 0), and sigfried will set his defense rolls that are less than 8 to 8.
