"Kotiate" literally means "cut liver". The ancestor figure on the butt of the handle symbolizes a guiding force or protective spirit, while the notches were used to trap and break an opponent's weapon.

- A kotiate was often made of whalebone, while ones carved out of wood were made for Europeans. The rarest and most prized kotiate were made from sacred greenstone.
