Lachesis

Page history last edited by MindBomber 16 years, 10 months ago

Of the Moirae, the Greek Fates, Lachesis was the Matron of the triad. (In relation to the Maiden, Clotho, and the Crone, Atropos.) It was Lachesis who measured the threads of mortal destiny.

Card Text

    • Horizo: You may have up to three Fate Inspirations in play.

Krino: Your attack rolls gain +1 for each Fate you have in play.

"Also she bare the Destinies and ruthless avenging Fates, Clotho and Lachesis and Atropos, who give men at their birth both evil and good to have, and they pursue the transgressions of men and of gods; and these goddesses never cease from their dread anger until they punish the sinner with a sore penalty." - Hesiod, Theogony

Rulings

From the QCT

If I'm interpreting this correctly, Lachesis's Horizo ability allows you to have three fate inspirations in play regardless of their type, so you can have any number of the fates (so long as one of them is Lachesis) regardless of whatever other cards you have in play, correct? So I can legally play an inspiration and Lachesis, no worries?

•This card allows you to have up to three inspirations that are all Fates in play. If any of your inspirations are not fates, you have an illegal card combination, and must deal with it in the usual manner.

Seti I & Lachesis**

We all know the ruling for Lu Bu and Sahm and Bokken-Bokken, right? Basically, Lu Bu allows a ranged weapon plus another 1-handed weapon, ignoring hand costs. However, bokken's ability to use another bokken is a different type of allowance, making it possible to wield the three weapons since they don't conflict. In any case, this kid I was demoing thought of running Seti, the three fates and the Native American basic attack bonus weapon.

Is this legal? Basically, since playing three fates is a different type of allowance than playing two inspirations, I was confused as hell. Even scarier, instead of the NA jawbone, what if he put in Wakhan Thanka or Rokumonsenmon? Would 4 inspirations (1 regular inspiration, and 3 fates) make a difference?

•The three fates are legal to play with Seti, for the same reason Lu Bu can play the cards you mention above. In your words, 'However, bokken's ability to use another bokken is a different type of allowance, making it possible to wield the three weapons since they don't conflict.' In the same way, Lachesis allows three fates - a different allowance than Seti's, making it legal since they don't conflict. I think since you clearly state an understanding of the rule, 'confused as hell' is something of an exaggeration.

•You could not run Rokumonsenmon or Wakhan Thanka along with the fates. The text on Lachesis specifies 'three Fate Inspirations' - this allows three cards that are inspirations and fates. Seti's 'two inspiration' allowance is already met and fully used by the time you have two (or three) fate inspirations in play as allowed by Lachesis.

Trivia

  • The Fates are but one instance of a sacred three-as-one in mythology.
  • Hesiod's description in the flavor text bears similarity to another Greek Triad, the Eumenides (the Furies).
  • Currently, Lachesis has the highest printed initiative of any Anachronism card.
