Referring to the Batu Khan question, are the two "types" of attacks Basic and Weapon?
•Actually, it's a little more complicated than that. Attacks can be weapon or basic, but can also be 'at +X', 'if possible', or simply made (as in the case of Marcus).
•So, if Batu Khan crit with a Shuriken, he'd get a free at +0 basic attack.
Yereho + Marcus
So, the question is, if I attack using Yereho's ability and the opponent is in my attack grid, do I get to add the grid bonus to the roll, or do I just get the +1 from the ability? Because it IS a basic attack, and the grid value is considerd to be a modifier, right?
People have argued that Marcus Claudius Marcellus and Gaiseric's abilities are similar, and therefore the grid bonus should not be added. I just don't think that's a true argument, because MCM doesn't have a grid, and Gaiseric's attack counts as a weapon attack, so its obvious you can't add the basic grid bonus.
•Basic attacks get the modifiers listed in the attacker's basic attack grid when they are made. Yereho provides replacement legality checks for whether the attack can be made, and a +1 bonus to the roll, but does not preclude other modifiers to that attack roll the way an 'at +X' attack does.
•When you use this or any other action ability to make a Basic Attack that is not made 'at +X', you add any modifiers from the Basic Attack Grid that are applicable based on the position of the attacker and defender.
•Gaiseric makes Weapon attacks, and therefore ignores his basic grid. If Marcus were given a grid by Catherine or another card, he could apply those modifiers to his Action attacks if the positioning lined up correctly.
Gameplay
Marcus is often derided as the worst warrior in Anachronism, though most players seem to agree that there are worse than him. He's only one of the worst. Most builds utilize cards that take advantage of Marcus' weaknesses -- such as Cota Corta, Teyaotenyiliztli, and Yereho.
History in Brief
Anachronism Package Blurb
"Marcus Claudius Marcellus - 'The Sword of Rome' - was regarded as one of the greatest generals of the Roman Republic. Apollo, Greek and Roman God of the Sun and Healing, inspires Marcellus to victory. Equipped with the best arms and armaments of the day, he arrives to the arena with segmented armor, a large shield, and the signature Roman pilum, both spear and bendable-shaft javelin."
Trivia
- No, it's not a typo. Marcus has an empty attack grid.
- According to popular history, Archimedes was killed during Marcellus' pacification of Syracuse; Marcellus was not happy about it.
