Osiris

Page history last edited by PBworks 17 years, 5 months ago

Osiris was one of the most important gods in Egyptian mythology. Through his death and rebirth, he came to embody the ideas of the underworld and life after death.

The god of death and the underworld, Osiris also presided over growth and vegetation. He was married to Ast (or Isis). Osiris was killed by his brother, Seth, who tricked him into a coffin before casting it into the Nile river.

History in Brief

About the Osiris myth

Depending on the time and place the story was told, Osiris was the son of Nut and Geb (the sky and the earth). As the Anachronism cards mentions, Osiris was brother to Isis (Ast), Seth, and Nephthys. He was pharoah of Egypt, and wedded Isis. Their most important offspring was Horus... but Osiris had another child. Nephthys, Seth's wife, couldn't conceive. In a fancy of "why not try," she slept with Osiris. The union was a success, and jackal-headed Anubis was the result.

But this union had an unfortunate side effect. Seth, jealous of his brother's power (and sleeping with his wife), plotted to overthrow the pharoah. At a banquet, Seth offered an exqusitely-crafted box to whomever could fit inside it. The moment Osiris slipped in to the perfectly-fitted box, Seth and his confederates nailed it shut and sealed it with molten lead. Seth tossed it to a far-off region, and took the throne.

Isis was eventually able to find Osiris and entomb him. Furious, Seth tore his dead brother's body apart, scattering the fourteen pieces to the winds. Isis, the devoted wife, found thirteen of these pieces. In the most popular version of the myth, she pieced her husband back together, and Osiris was given lordship over the Underworld. He sat as the head judge, who gave permission to live on after death.

Trivia

Osiris...

  • civilized Egypt with the help of his wife.
  • was considered part of the Great Ennead (the nine big names in the Egyptian pantheon).
  • was missing one piece that Isis was unable to find: his phallus.
  • in another version of the myth, was resurrected just long enough to sleep with Isis (and conceive Horus), before Seth tore him apart.
