During the siege of Rome, Alarich marched up to the city, but could not breach its defenses. On August 24, 410, the Salarian Gate was thrown open (possibly by traitor(s)). The Visigoths were then able to sack the city of Rome.

With the death of Stilicho, the armies of the Roman Empire were left without a leader capable of stopping Alarich from advancing on Rome itself. Alarich pierced Rome's defenses at the northeast Salarian Gate and, with that, the city fell.
