Tariq ibn Ziyad

Page history last edited by MindBomber 16 years, 10 months ago

Tariq ibn Ziyad was an Arabic leader, who defeated the Visigoths and conquered the Iberian Peninsula (modern-day Spain & Portugal) in the name of Islam. The new gains were known as al-Andalus, and the Moorish presence in the region would play an integral role in Western politics and war.

History in Brief

Anachronism Package Blurb

"Deputy to Musa ibn Nusair, the viceroy of North Africa, Tariq ibn Ziyad landed at Gibraltar in order to intervene in a Visigothic civil war that was raging in Spain. Tariq swept through Iberia, with the pivotal victory of his campaign coming at the Battle of Guadalete, where he routed and killed King Roderic. What began as an intervention quickly turned into conquest, and Tariq was made governor of Iberia. However, Musa ibn Nusair had meanwhile claimed all credit for Tariq’s military conquests, an insult that Tariq could not countenance. Marching to Damascus, he presented his evidence to the caliph. On the strength of this testimony, Nusair was stripped of his titles and belongings, imprisoned, scourged and ultimately executed.

Use Tariq ibn Ziyad, the conqueror of Spain, to sweep aside all those who stand against you in the Anachronism arena, knowing that your victories will forever be your own."
