In 1393, three years before the Battle of Nicopolis, Mircea the Old and Beyazid I, the Thunderbolt, signed a capitulation. In essence, it stated that for suzerainty and a nominal annual sum, the Ottomans recognized Wallachia as an autonomous state, and its citizens were subject to Wallachian laws.
